Bike Night Inspires Saturday Night Mesa River View Car Show

Organizers of a new weekly car show and cruise-in at Mesa Riverview plaza hope to mirror the success of the Friday Bike Nights that have drawn hundreds of motorcycles and spectators.

"The (Riverview) merchants tried to do a cruise-in on their own, but it wasn't real successful," said Nancy Perry, who promotes car events around the Valley through Nancy Perry Productions. "They brought in Bike Night, and that really helped them (get business). This will be the first big cruise-in for the plaza."

The car show kicks off Saturday with a bang: An early Indy racing car will be displayed, the Still Cruisin' Band will play classic rock and doo-wop and T-shirts will be given to the first 150 entrants in the event. Entry is free, and all entrants will receive dash plaques.

Perry said she got some input for her casual cruise-in from her friend Barry Caraway, who created Bike Night and is launching a new season Friday.

Matta's Grill & Cantina, Cactus Moon Sports Grill, Chili's Grill & Bar, the Cinemark Mesa 16 theaters and other sponsors have contributed to "goody bags" for those showing their vehicles.

Nearby restaurants will offer food and drink specials during the show, and those who patronize businesses in the plaza will get tickets for a raffle with such prizes as gift cards and hotel stays. Live music will continue weekly with a rotating lineup of bands.
"My kids and I love cars," said Peter Matta, owner of the restaurant bearing his family name. "That's all there is to it. These kinds of events are fun. They bring everyone out. Families love cars."

Perry said all makes, models and years of cars and trucks are welcome at the show, but classics from the 1920s through the '70s are expected to make up the lion's share of entrants. Awards for the top 10 cars will be given each week. Judging will rotate among merchants, community groups and spectators.

Perry said she hopes to raise funds for a different charity each week.
Two retired New York firefighters will drive a firetruck to the kickoff show and sell T-shirts to benefit victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

A Phoenix veterans home and area food bank are in line to benefit from two of the shows in November.

"I'm open to ideas for charities," Perry said. "There are so many good causes that need help."
Because of the struggling economy, she said, organizers decided to make the event free for those entering vehicles and for spectators.

"This is the type of thing that helps people get along during these horrible times," she said.

Mesa

What is the prayer walk? The Christian community, coming together, encircling the city of Mesa; in prayer on a specified time and date in January. The event is founded by Brant D. Baker. Baker is pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and feels a prayer walk for the city is a great way to start the new year.

Mesa Prayer walk has a vision. The vision, for the Christian prayer community to encircle the city of Mesa, in prayer, for spiritual protection, political wisdom and economic prosperity in the coming year.

The Prayer? That God will "shower" the city of Mesa with blessings along with the "Ancient Enemy" being put to flight and that Jesus will be "magnified" as Lord and Savior of the people.

The Project? To assign one church per mile, in a perimeter, creating a community of faith among those that agree to walk and pray in their assigned mile in January on Sunday the 8th @ 3 p.m.

The Witness? The org. imagines the questions that will raise in the minds of citizens, as hundreds walk in prayer , on this day in January. Believing that it is most likely God will take advantage of this city prayer circle and spark "meaningful conversation" with non-believers covering the "power of prayer" being offered in the name of Christ.

You can register your church to walk one or more mile segments by clicking the green button on the Mesa Prayer Walk Map page and filling out the information - voila!

Your registration is a promise to have at least one walker on that segment of the Mesa perimeter, praying. Once registered, you will receive updates from the site. Available segments are listed under the Mesa Map. Check out the list of tips to help get you organized!

T-Shirts are 5 bucks each and orders must be in by Nov. 21st. Shirts can be picked up @ ACME Prints in Tempe @ 2240 N. Scottsdale Road Suite. 3

No matter our differing beliefs, good things can only come when people get together sending out positive messages.

Mesa Republic - Small Paper with Big Content! What is your Favorite Arizona Spot for Coffee?

The Mesa Republic is a small news paper from Azcentral.com.

The Mesa Republic is given out freely at many locations in the East Valley.  I picked my copy up during a late night visit to an East Valley Waffle House and I am glad I did! Not only was I out for a late night cup of coffee, I was able to read about Arizona's newest java mecca!

Aside from some popular local news coverage the Mesa Republic shares upcoming events and new happenings around town and not to mention, plenty of local coupons are included! Also, the paper includes a Top Dining Picks section if you are looking to try something new and tasty.

The best part of my read was learning that the Mesa Republic had a weekly feature highlighting the java joint boon in downtown Mesa. Apparently, coffee is a big boon in the downtown area.  The article featured the Sugar Shack @ 12 N. Center St. , Gotham City Comics and Coffee @ 46 W. Main St., Lo-Fi coffee @ 105 W. Main St., Vinyl Rush Cafe' @ 40 N. MacDonald and Inside the Bungalow @ 48 N. Robson.

I have been to Inside the Bungalow over the years, through more than one owner, and I always enjoy my visit there but I am looking forward to trying out some of the others next time I am in the East Valley.  Coffee Rush is an all time family  favorite. Coffee Rush,  not only has some darn good drinks ,  also provides some of the friendliest service in town! I do enjoy Starbucks, but I more prefer to support local and find the hidden gems of the Valley.

Coffee is definitely one of my essentials so knowing the best of the local spots in an Arizona Essential in my book!

Would love to hear about Arizona's other coffee spots so what and where is everyone's favorite place to get a cup o' joe?

Please comment or e-mail me and let us know your favorite coffee house!
