Avondale center aids police with afflicted non-offenders: "West Valley police officers spent too much time driving mentally ill people who need help and substance abusers who need treatment to Phoenix instead of patrolling the streets, officials say.
That has changed with a non-profit group opening a center in Avondale that can accept those people, find them help and keep them if needed for three to five days in a 16-bed transition facility.
On Wednesday, Community Bridges opened the center, West Valley Access Point and Transition Point, at 824 N. 99th Ave., near the northwestern corner of 99th Avenue and Van Buren Street. The facility serves the West Valley, thus shortening the drive of the region's officers."
