Residents rally after Scottsdale 6 Drive-In closes

Finally!

Supporters of Scottsdale Six Drive-in have been rallying efforts from Facebook groups to meet-ups in an attempt to gain notice, and support from the public , while trying to save the theater.

I know I blogged about the Drive-In closing down last week but I also know that many supporters were pleading to get some local news coverage to help save the theater - and it looks like they finally did.

Kudo's to ABC15 for taking up this story. The S6 Drive-In really is a piece of our Arizona history and the public should be informed whenever we are at risk of losing a cherished piece of our state.

Who says you can't move mountains?

Get enough caring hearts and the world really can be changed?

Let's hope the theater owners and the SRPMC realize how much the Valley adores their beloved piece of Americana and negotiate an agreement to keep the drive-in open!

Like many of our S6 supporters, I grew up visiting the drive in - a tradition we have in our family and hope to continue.

I can't count the wonderful nights we have spent at the Scottsdale Six. I used to take the children and all of their friends. We wrapped up many holidays and nights out by ending our evening with encore movie presentations.

Until the closing of the drive-in, we would rally family and friends to meet up at Scottsdale Six a few times a month. On quiet nights, as a couple - we would sneak off to the drive-in so my heart dropped when we called S6 to get show times and got a recording that the drive-in would not be open Labor Day weekend.

We randomly phoned the following week only to find the theater recordings declining. The last call , to the drive-in, pointed movie goers to the Scottsdale Six Drive-In Facebook page and the terrible news that after 34 years in the Valley, the theater was closed.

I love that the S6 Drive-In offers three movie times, six screens and encore presentations and some of the best popcorn and snack bar food and prices in town. Also, the drive-in would have random fun events - snow cones and water slides.

Many times we have went out on a weekend night and finished our evening out with an encore presentation at the Scottsdale Six or started our evening with a premiere.

The local drive-in is affordable, nostalgic fun. I can't imagine the Valley without it.

What about you dear hearts, do you have any Scottsdale Six Drive In theater memories to share? Do you think we can save the Scottsdale Six?

Residents rally after Scottsdale 6 Drive-In closes: " Residents in the Valley rallied together to try to save a Scottsdale drive-in that has faded away.

On the corner of McKellips and Hayden roads, a small yet determined group came together to show how much the landmark has become an important part of their lives.

“It’s like losing a part of the family,” one supporter said.

“I’m so sad I could cry,” said another.

Across the street from them were the blank screens of the Scottsdale 6 Drive-in, which closed down after 34 years.

The Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community that owns the land tells us that the lease expired and there was no effort to put a new lease in place."
