Honors First Responders
What: All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church invites the public to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the first responders of the West Valley. Meet the members of the fire, police and EMT departments of El Mirage, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Youngtown as well as the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City and Sun City West. Those dressed in uniform are invited to partake in an honorary buffet luncheon. For a small donation, food and soft drinks will be available to the public. A brief, special presentation will take place at 11:30 a.m.

Celebration Marking
10th Anniversary of Sept. 11
What: The Recreation Centers of Sun City West will mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 with a special program featuring the Military Order of the World Wars, Chapter 131, Sun Cities. The program will include the Sandra Day O’Connor High School marching band, posting of the colors, flag folding ceremony, national anthem, commemoration prayer song to the unsung hero, as well as guest speakers Capt. T.J. MacKay of the Sun City West Fire District and Lt. Ken Booker of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. There will be a tribute to the first responders that serve our community daily. The event is free.
When: 1 p.m. Sunday.

Never Forget — Hope
What: Church on the Green Assembly of God in Sun City West will have a Patriotic Remembrance Rally on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The presentation’s theme which is “Never Forget — Hope,” will not only remember, but also look ahead to our future. The sanctuary choir, under the direction of the Rev. Loren Gerdes, along with soloists and ensembles, will present patriotic and gospel music, along with moving 9/11 video excerpts, and a challenge by the Rev. Dr. Ben Leonard, senior pastor. Law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and civil servants will be recognized and honored for their service. The rally is free.

9/11 Celebration/Patriots Day
What: The Agua Fria Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sun City, will have its annual Patriots Day celebration. The bell will ring 10 times to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and to acknowledge all uniformed civil servants for their service to our community and country. The guest speaker will be David Geffen, the Arizona state director for “Bugles Across America.” Geffen is the official bugler for the State Disabled American Veteran Ritual Team, bugler for the American Legion Post Honor Guard and plays taps for many veteran funerals. Agua Fria will present a new POW-MIA flag to the Recreation Centers of Sun City governing board. The flag will be flown at the Bell Recreation Center. The Hallie Orme Thomas Society and Hohokam Society of the Children of the American Revolution will pass out American flags to all in attendance.

9/11 Memorial – Hope! — 10 Years Later
What: The remembrance service event will have displays from several local organizations. Firefighters, police officers, military personnel and the public is invited. Admission is free.

9/11 Remembrance Simulcast
What: Palm West Community Church will be the West Valley site for the Sept. 11 worldwide simulcast from Israel of “A Wake-up Call for God’s People,” featuring Anne Graham Lotz and Joel Rosenberg, with music by the Dove Award-winning group Selah. The two-hour Internet stream at 6 p.m. from Jerusalem is expected to attract as many as 190 million viewers in 200 countries. Attendance is open to the public and is free of charge. Tribute to Public Safety Officials
Who Died in 9/11 Attacks
What: The Surprise fire and police departments will pay special tribute Sunday to all public safety officials who died in the 9/11 attacks. An unveiling of a new memorial made of steel from the World Trade Center is planned, as well as a procession from the fire and police honor guard. The striking of bells — at 8:46 a.m. and 9:06 a.m. — will mark the East Coast times that each of the World Trade Center towers were struck. The public is asked to park in the City Hall parking garage and arrive at least 15 minutes before the event begins to avoid causing a disruption during the ceremony.

10-year Anniversary Service
of Remembrance,
Prayer and Hope
What: The Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church 10-year anniversary service of remembrance, prayer and hope will be offered to the community. The guest speaker will be Col. John Bonsell. He was assigned to the Pentagon the day it was attacked and was instrumental in facilitating the evacuation of the building. Col. Bonsell is the brother the Rev. Jim Bonsell, associate pastor at Shepherd of the Hills.

Arizona GOP 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony
What: The Arizona Republican Party will host a faith-based ceremony to commemorate those who lost their lives on 9/11. The Rev. C.T. Wright will deliver the prayer and keynote address.
When: 2 p.m. Sunday

“Day to Remember” Memorial
What: Ten years after the terror attacks on America, citizens of Queen Creek will come together in a commemoration ceremony to honor the innocent victims of Sept. 11, 2001.
When: 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday
Where: Queen Creek Library, 21802 S. Ellsworth Road
Day of Service: 9/11 and Beyond
What: Find a way to volunteer in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11. The event will connect the community with local volunteer opportunities. At the event, attendees can put together care packages for soldiers, create hand-tied blankets for charity and help make a memory chain.
When: 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 3

Gilbert Sept. 11 Ceremony
What: The Gilbert 9/11 Memorial will be unveiled at the ceremony to pay tribute to those lost, and remember the heroes during the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The ceremony will include honor guard and color guard, as well as performance of “You Are Our Heroes” by elementary students and tributes to loved ones lost by local residents. Those who come early, by about 7:30 a.m., can view a video of local residents sharing their personal stories. Lawn seating is available; please bring your own chairs and blankets.

Moving Memories — Moving Forward
What: A community memorial service planned in collaboration with family members of those lost on 9/11 and the Arizona Interfaith Movement. The service will have speeches by four Arizonans who lost loved ones on 9/11, 10 children will recited the “Golden Rule” of each of their different faiths and several local musicians will perform American patriotic music. It will close with a moment of silence.

“Never Forget” Walk and Ceremony
What: Members of the public will follow behind the Phoenix Fire and Police Honor Guard and public safety apparatus starting at Chase Bank Tower to a stage at CityScape. There, a number of speakers will address the audience as part of a memorial ceremony paying tribute to the men and women lost on 9/11.

9/11 Hero Appreciation Day to benefit the Chandler Police Department Charities
What: As a way to honor the heroes who bravely sacrificed their own lives in the line of duty, SanTan Brewing Company has teamed up with the Chandler Fire Department for a 9/11 hero appreciation fundraiser benefiting the Chandler Firefighter Charities. Patrons will have a chance to give back to the community while off-duty Chandler firefighters work as servers.

9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance
What: Mesa is hosting a 9/11 10th Anniversary Tribute Project by building a playground. Volunteers are needed to help build the playground, distribute fire safety information and paint curb numbers. A pancake breakfast will be served to volunteers at 6:30 a.m. prior to the effort. Preserving Family
What: Part of Gilbert’s Week of Tribute, this event is meant to remind us all how important it is to celebrate family. The event will include a variety of areas to learn and share, including a photo area for family portraits, a book reading area, another area for scrapbooking and other family friendly events. There will be water, donuts and breakfast bars available.

Remembrance Ceremony
A remembrance ceremony on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks will be in the evening outside the State Capitol in Phoenix. The event will honor first responders and other American honors. Participants will include State Historian Marshall Trimble, representatives of firefighters and police and Bishop Thomas Olmstead of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

September Concert for Peace Remembers 9/11
What: Join the Chandler Irish Cultural Council and the Chandler community as they take part in the free second annual September Concert. The September Concert commemorates the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Tempe Candlelight Vigil
What: As part of the Healing Field project, presented by Tempe and the Valley of the Sun Exchange Club Foundation, a candlelight vigil will be held with music, prayer and guest speakers.

Tempe Healing Field
What: Tempe and the Valley of the Sun Exchange Clubs Foundation will present the Healing Field, a field filled with nearly 3,000 3-by-5 foot flags for every death from the 9/11 attacks. The project is to put into perspective the enormity of the human loss of that day.

Tempe 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Reading of Victims Names
What: The ceremony will begin at the time the first plane struck the first tower. It will include a presentation of colors, music, prayer and the reading of names of the first responders who gave their lives on 9/11. Later in the morning, the names of all the victims who died in the attacks will be read.

What: Reflections on 9/11, 10 years later with Aaron Brown, a former CNN anchor, whose first day on-air for CNN was on Sept. 11, 2001, from New York City.

3rd Annual Patriot Day Celebration
What: The Friends of Freedom, a 501(c)(3) chartered foundation, pending nonprofit organization status, is hosting an event to benefit 100 Club of Arizona, ThanksUSA and Fighter Country Foundation. These organizations seek to help soldiers, veterans and their families, as well as first responders killed in the line of duty. Expected to speak at the event are Gov. Jan Brewer, Rep. Ben Quayle, Lt. Gen. John Bradley (retired Joint Chiefs of Staff), Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Phoenix Vice Mayor Thelda Williams, Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and Phoenix Councilman Claude Mattox.
