Weekend storm system may finally cool Phoenix area

Weekend storm system may finally cool Phoenix area: "Temperatures are expected to rise above average in the Phoenix area on Wednesday and Thursday, peaking between 106 and 110 degrees.

Relief could come in the form of strong thunderstorms, heavy rain and double-digit temperatures this weekend. A low-pressure system building in Southern California could complement the increasingly unstable atmosphere to produce strong winds, frequent lightning, hail and heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service.

"Warm, moist air down near the ground and cool air about makes for an unstable air mass," said meteorologist Craig Ellis with the National Weather Service."
