Spruce Up Your Park Day

Now if you have so much fun you feel guilty for enjoying Come Out & Play Day for free, you can give back - the second annual Spruce Up Your Park Day happens earlier that morning, 7 to 10 a.m. at Winsor Rotary Park, 20th Street between avenues B and C. Parks and Rec is looking for volunteers to help do cleanup and minor improvements around the exercise equipment, playground and pond areas located around the park and also help put down mulch around the trees. Take Pride In Yuma - Paint-Out Set for Sept. 24

Take Pride in Yuma Paint-Out

Paint brush resting on paint can filled with yellow paint.The next Take Pride in Yuma paint-out is set for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 24, starting in the area of 3rd Street and 30th Avenue. For just a couple hours of your time, you can help restore a graffiti-covered wall into pristine condition! We provide the paint and rollers (just call us at 373-5228 to let us know you're coming so we bring enough) - you provide your own sunscreen and comfortable clothing and shoes you don't mind getting some paint on. Help us "take pride in Yuma!"

Graffiti Clean-Up and Vandalism

Spray paint can and chisel tipped marker wrapped in chain. There were 26 cases of graffiti abated the period of Sept. 7-13. This compares with 34 cases the previous week. Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year. Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782-7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.

Celebrating Yuma and Digital Delights

Don't miss this exciting exhibit and performance as local artists rock the Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Main St., with an outstanding assembly of street art in exhibit and installation, taking place 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. Wedding & Quinceanera Expo

Make plans now to visit the Wedding and Quinceanera expo, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive. Learn everything you need to plan your special day without having to drive out of town. Two fashion shows are scheduled:The hottest trends in dresses, shoes, jewelry, hair and makeup will be featured. Guys, the Man Cave is located in the Lounge. Dads and fiancés can play X-Box or watch football on 82-inch TVs while resting on comfy furniture and enjoying refreshments. Also scheduled are prizes, giveaways and tastings. Bring your family, friends and girlfriends!

Fall/Winter Activity Guide Out in Paper & Online; Registration Under Way Now

Cover of the 2011-2012 Fall/Winter Activities Guide Get ready to plan your next two seasons - the Parks and Rec Fall and Winter Activities Guide is out! Copies are also be available at various Parks and Recreation facilities throughout Yuma.
Registration is under way for all either in person at the Parks & Recreation office on the first floor of City Hall or on the Parks & Recreation section of our web site. For more information by phone, call 928-373-5243.

Cars, Inc. for Kids

If you're aged 7 to 9 and love cars, Cars, Inc. is the program for you. This auto-themed workshop will entail the customization of your own car, car races, and car games. Come join the fun with all your friends 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at Clymer Recreation Center, 553 S. Orange Ave. Registration is required and fees apply; call or visit Parks and Recreation.

Kayak Fishing

Experience fishing in a whole new way with Kayak Fishing, happening 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at Riverside Outdoor Education Center, just below the Territorial Prison. Fishing in a kayak allows the fisherman to become a part of the environment and move about the lake freely. A fishing trip on Mittry Lake is a great way to spend a Saturday morning. Fisher's 14 and older need a fishing license. Fees are $23 or $15 with City resident credit; register today with Yuma Parks and Recreation. For more information call 373-5243.

Halloween Ball Bash Softball Tournaments

Softball and glove on grass field. The Halloween Ball Bash softball tournaments will be held on successive weekends on various City fields. The co-rec tournament will be held Oct. 22-23, with the men's and women's tournaments Oct 29-30. Registration begins Sept. 12 for all tournaments and runs through Oct. 13 for co-rec or Oct. 20 for men's and women's. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of four games in a round-robin format, followed by A/B playoff. Register teams for $235 each in person or via mail to Parks and Recreation, One City Plaza, Box 13012, Yuma, AZ 85366-3012. Swim For Fitness (Lap Swimming)

Lap swimming in the Swim for Fitness program is a total-body workout. This program is now being offered at two locations and at two separate times of the day: 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, Sept. 1 through Oct. 30 at Valley Aquatic Center, and noon to 1:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, Sept. 1 through Oct. 30 at Carver Pool. Come and work out while enjoying the refreshing water. Fees can be paid per day or for the entire session; call Parks and Recreation for more information.

Men's Wooden Bat Softball Leagues

By request, Parks and Recreation is putting on a softball league for guys who like the feel of the old wooden bats. Play will take place Nov. 8 through Dec. 14 at various City softball fields with games starting at 6:30 p.m. Registration will take place Sept. 26 through Nov. 1. Boys Junior High Basketball and Girls Cricket Basketball

Registration is under way now for basketball for boys in grades 7 and 8, and for girls in grades 4-6. The emphasis of the league is on fundamentals, basic understanding of the game, and sportsmanship. Modified rules have been established for the girls to increase success and promote sound play. The leagues will play games at various times in November and December athe Joe Henry Optimist Center on 1st Avenue and 18th Street. Fees apply and registration is required through Parks and Recreation, 373-5243.

Pools

Here's where you can still cool off: Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St., offers open swim Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5:45 p.m. through Sept. 25. Fees are $2.50 for children under 18 ($2 with City resident credit) and $5 for adults ($3.50 with City resident credit).
