Az Central Arizona Landmark: Chandler , Chandler City Hall

Landmark: Chandler City Hall:

"Where is it? 175 S. Arizona Ave. (south of Boston Street).

When was it built? Building opened October 2010.

What is it? Site of many municipal offices."

Background: For years there was debate about the need for a new Chandler City Hall starting in the 1980s once city outgrew the space near Delaware and Buffalo Streets (currently home to Planning and Development and Public Works offices).

In the 1990s, many city offices were housed in leased space at the Rocky Mountain Financial Center and later the Chandler Office Center (both at Arizona Place and Commonwealth Avenue). The city leased more than 30,000 square feet of office space at the five-story buildings.

That changed last year when the new, five-story building opened. The new City Hall has a modern look and incorporates the latest in energy saving technology. The $73 million project has been recognized numerous times for its environmentally friendly design and features.

The building is being considered for gold-level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

On Saturday the Valley Forward Association honored the project with a Crescordia Award at its annual Environmental Excellence Awards presentation. Chandler City Hall was chosen best in the Civic Buildings and Structures category. The Crescordia Award is the top prize handed out at that annual ceremony.
