According to the World CarFree Network, "a car-light community facilitates healthier lifestyles, builds a tighter-knit and safer community, improves air quality, mitigates climate change, increases affordability and promotes national security by lowering dependence on oil."
Anyone can sign up to participate. Just visit www.carfreeflag.com and take the pledge. Everyone who signs up will receive coupons good Thursday at local businesses. For a bus schedule, visit www.mountainline.az.gov/. An all-day bus pass is $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for kids; exact change is required.
CarFree Day is included in the Flagstaff Walks schedule of events. Other events include:"
-- Friday, 9 a.m. Start location is Downtown Bus Transfer Station at the corner of Phoenix and Mike's Pike. About 2 total miles of walking to explore the area for the availability of wheelchair access and general disability awareness.
-- Sunday, 8 a.m. - noon. Walk, ride a bike or take the bus to the Farmer's Market. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon in the City Hall parking lot. Sign in at the market for a drawing (at 11 a.m.) for two $15 tokens to be used at the market.
-- Monday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m. Community clean-up: Meet at the Journey church parking lot on the corner of University Heights Drive South and Highway 89. Participants will pick up trash on Litzler Drive and along the Sinclair Wash FUTS. Bring gloves. Trash bags will be provided.
-- Tuesday, Oct. 4. School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. Call Jack Welch at 714-0504 for directions to one near you. Take this opportunity to say thank you to those unsung heroes who make sure our children get across the street and into school safely
-- Wednesday, Oct. 5. International Walk To School Day. Walk your kid (or someone else's) to school. To volunteer to help with this international project call Kim Austin at 679-7213 or email: kaustin@coconino.az.gov.
-- Thursday, Oct. 6, 8:30 a.m. Progressive Breakfast Walk. Starts at Downtown Bus Transfer Station at the corner of Phoenix and Mike's Pike. Join members of the Flagstaff Pedestrian Advisory Committee for a wake up walk to the Kick Stand Kafe for coffee. Come back into the downtown to eat a quick but very tasty breakfast at the MIX located in the Old Town Shops and finish with a fresh bagel at Biff's. About 2 total miles of walking. Come only if you're a happy morning person and willing to pay for your food.
-- Friday, Oct. 7, 6 - 8 p.m. First Friday Art Walk. Visit the Pedestrian Advisory Committee at their booth in Heritage Square. PAC members will pass out brand new FUTS map and answer questions. Information will also be available about Coconino County Heath Department programs and the winter walking program and challenge.
